Yann Demange exits Marvel’s ‘Blade’ project as Mahershala Ali remains attached. Marvel prioritizes quality in the reboot set for 2025 release.

In a surprising yet amicable turn of events, Yann Demange has stepped down as the director of Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated “Blade” reboot. This marks the second directorial change for the project, following Bassam Tariq’s departure.

Yann Demange, known for his work on critically acclaimed television series such as “Lovecraft Country” and “Top Boy,” had been a promising choice to helm the new “Blade” film. However, sources reveal that Demange’s departure occurred some time ago and was entirely amicable, allowing both parties to part on good terms.

The reason behind his exit has not been officially disclosed, but it underscores the challenges Marvel faces in bringing this iconic character back to the big screen.

Eric Pearson, a seasoned Marvel writer who most recently worked on “Fantastic Four,” has been brought on to revise the “Blade” script. Michael Starrbury, Nic Pizzolatto, and Michael Green penned previous drafts. Pearson’s involvement suggests a fresh perspective and renewed focus on ensuring the script meets the high standards set by both the studio and the fans.

Stuck in development hell for years, the “Blade” reboot was initially announced at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con. Since then, the project has encountered numerous setbacks, including changes in the script and creative direction.

Despite these hurdles, Mahershala Ali is still attached to the project as the half-human vampire hunter. Ali’s attachment to the project adds a layer of prestige and anticipation, given his stature as a two-time Academy Award-winning actor.

His involvement signals Marvel’s dedication to delivering a high-quality film that does justice to the beloved character originally portrayed by Wesley Snipes in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The original “Blade” film, directed by Stephen Norrington and released in 1998, played a crucial role in establishing Marvel’s presence in the cinematic landscape.

The movie was a commercial success, earning $131 million worldwide on a $45 million budget. It was lauded for its R-rated, martial-arts-infused approach and Snipes’ charismatic performance, which positioned “Blade” as a genre-defining film rather than a typical comic book adaptation.

This success paved the way for Marvel’s future endeavors in the film industry, long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) became a cultural phenomenon. Given this legacy, the pressure to get the “Blade” reboot right is immense. Marvel Studios, now under the leadership of Kevin Feige, is keenly aware of the high expectations surrounding the project.

Currently, Marvel’s next slate of films includes “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Thunderbolts,” and “Fantastic Four,” all of which are either nearing completion or well underway. This strategic pacing grants the “Blade” team the breathing room needed to refine the film without the pressure of an imminent release date.

Despite the changes and delays, “Blade” is still scheduled for release on November 7, 2025.
