The Fantastic Four: First Steps was officially revealed as the title for the upcoming Marvel Studios film during an electrifying Hall H panel at Comic-Con on Saturday.
Director Matt Shakman announced after showcasing an early teaser reel, followed by the surprise introduction of the cast members: Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
The teaser offered fans a glimpse of the film’s tone, styled as a newsreel. It featured scenes such as Mr. Fantastic addressing a disinterested classroom under a “Fantastic Science” banner, the superhero team’s flying Fantasticar, space suits, a rocket launch, and the Thing appearing on a dating show as a mystery contestant. The reel concluded with a shot of Galactus, the film’s antagonist.
Additionally, it was announced that Michael Giacchino, known for his work on “Up” and “Lost,” will compose the score for “First Steps.” The panelists are scheduled to return to the U.K. on Monday, with production set to begin shortly after.
“We’re embracing a retro-future ’60s aesthetic. Syd Mead was a key inspiration. The ’60s symbolize optimism to me,” Shakman shared, discussing the film’s period setting and its homage to the influential designer. “I adore the Fantastic Four and their powers. We aim to stay true to the comics while grounding it in reality.”
The film will be set in a different reality which will be 1960s New York with retro-futuristic setting. It is not confirmed whether Doom will be in the movie. It was also confirmed that this will not be an origin story. Just like how Spiderman in MCU started with Peter Parker with his powers, “Fantastic Four: First Steps” will have their powers already and they will be a family.
The stellar cast includes Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby as Susan Storm (the Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm (the Human Torch), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm (the Thing). The ensemble also features Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer and Ralph Ineson as Galactus, with Paul Walter Hauser, Natasha Lyonne, and John Malkovich in undisclosed roles.
Shakman, known for his work on WandaVision, is directing The Fantastic Four: First Steps from a script by Eric Pearson, Josh Friedman, Jeff Kaplan, and Ian Springer, with additional writing by Peter Cameron. Produced by Kevin Feige for Marvel Studios, the film is scheduled to premiere in theaters on July 25, 2025.
