Marvel 1943 Rise of Hydra Story Will be Told From 4 Perspectives Amy Hennig Reveals More Details

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra delivers a globe-trotting WWII epic, uniting Captain America and Black Panther against Hydra’s rising menace

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra was revealed at GDC 2024 and since then, there have been no new details about the game. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Amy Hennig revealed some new details about the game. Skydance New Media, helmed by celebrated game writer and director Amy Hennig, is set to debut Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra in 2025.

The game centers on a unique narrative pairing: a young Steve Rogers, still finding his footing as Captain America, and Azzuri, the Black Panther of 1943 and T’Challa’s grandfather. Drew Moerlein voices Rogers, while Khary Payton brings Azzuri to life in a performance described by Hennig as “mature” and deeply grounded. The two meet in Occupied Paris, where their initial tension evolves into an uneasy alliance as they face a common foe — Hydra.

“They’re confronting the same enemies but initially almost working against each other,” Hennig reveals. “Good people have to work together to overcome evil.”

Wakanda’s Hidden Power

For the first time, players will journey to a beautifully realized Wakanda in the midst of its isolationist era, depicted as an impenetrable jungle shrouded in mystery. According to Hennig, the setting plays a critical role in the story as Wakanda faces the threat of a shrinking world and rising global conflict.

Wakanda’s involvement in the game reflects the global stakes of the narrative. “We wanted to tell a globe-trotting story,” Hennig says, hinting at other yet-to-be-revealed locations that will complement the central settings of Occupied Paris and Wakanda.

The story will be told from 4 different perspectives

Players won’t just step into the shoes of Captain America and Black Panther. Marvel 1943 features four distinct playable characters, each offering unique gameplay perspectives:

  • Gabriel Jones (Marque Richardson), a Howling Commando and sharpshooter.
  • Nanali (Megalyn Echikunwoke), a Wakandan spy embedded in Paris.

The supporting cast also includes Lyne Renée as Julie, a key figure in the French Resistance, and Joel Johnstone as Howard Stark, the inventive father of Iron Man.

Hydra takes center stage as the game’s primary antagonist, promising players plenty of classic Marvel action. Hennig hints at surprises ahead, including a mysterious third super soldier glimpsed in the initial story trailer. “In these kinds of stories, you always want your MacGuffin to pull the characters along,” she says, teasing an “unfolding mystery” filled with intrigue and twists.

A Visual and Narrative Spectacle

We’re entirely CG, so it’s really easy to get ungrounded real quick. You can see even the movies can fall under that trap; too much CG and you don’t know the ground you’re standing on. We really wanted the visual fidelity to be high so that you could kind of forget that you’re looking at a game, that it should feel and look and sound and smell like you’re watching a great Marvel movie or TV show, but you’re driving the action.

Hennig and her team are committed to delivering a cinematic gaming experience, blending high-fidelity visuals with grounded storytelling. Drawing from her work on the Uncharted series, Hennig aims to craft a “shared living room experience” where players and spectators alike can immerse themselves in the action.

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is scheduled to release in 2025 although there is no fixed release date, yet.
